Annual conference run by Neil Stewart Associates to bring together senior managers from further education, adult learning services, local authorities and the voluntary sector. It look at some of the key challenges in reaching the new public service agreement targets on adults skills for 2020. Social class impacts upon literacy in a number of ways, both in terms of home and community literacy practices and curriculum and pedagogy in educational institutions. This special focus day will provide an opportunity to consider the way in which social class intersects with other aspects of identity, such as race and class, to shape the literacy practices and experiences of young people across a range of social, ethnic and linguistic groups. The day will be of interest to teachers, language and literacy coordinators, advisors, inspectors and managers as well as to teacher-educators, researchers and publishers. For more information visit

Library Theatre, Paradise Place, Birmingham. 7pm. 30 of the country's top slam poets scour the nation's schools looking for young talented performance poets to represent at the UK Schools Slam Poetry Championships. Judges award points based on an original two minute performance from each of the poets in three age categories. Slam poetry is revolutionising participation in schools literacy endeavours accross the UK.

44th international conference of the United Kingdom Literacy Association. Will be held at Liverpool Hope University. The three-day event will explore the way literacy, culture and identity are inextricably entwined in the life experiences of everyone and will consider how educators can build on these experiences in imaginative and stimulating ways. www.ukla.org

United Kingdom Literacy Association conference exploring approaches to the use of moving image media in the literacy curriculum. The conference offers three strands: leading learning in moving image media education at local authority level; developing classroom practice; and screen education, aimed at educators working in independent cinemas and pracitioners interested in working with them.
