Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another in the English language.

This resource contains a selection of more than 20 high-quality picture books that support the teaching of phonics, includes titles like Once Upon an Alphabet by Oliver Jeffers, Shark in the Park by Nick Sharratt and There's a Bear on my Chair by Ross Collins.

Each book is described in the following format:

  • Book title: the name of the book, an image of the book cover and the names of the author and illustrator
  • Phonics phase: books for phonics phases 2 to 6 are included
  • Notes: a short explanation about the book and how it supports the teaching of phonics
