Children's and Young People's Reading in 2014

This report outlines findings about children’s and young people’s reading from our fifth annual literacy survey, which we conducted in November/December 2014. 32,026 children and young people aged eight to 18 participated. For the first time in 2014, we had enough pupils to include KS5 in our analyses.

The report shows that levels of reading enjoyment and daily reading outside class are both at their highest levels in nine years. However, the gap between the proportion of girls and boys who enjoy reading has increased and more girls are reading daily outside class.

Finding are broken down by sociodemographic information and are linked to reading attainment data (available for 13,000 of participating pupils).
