The Vital Link online library toolkit

The online toolkit is aimed at library staff who want to develop their services to adult learners in line with the Government's Skills for Life strategy and Framework for the Future action plan for public libraries.

Guidance and case studies are linked to the Vital Link Improvement Framework to help libraries assess their current services, share good practice and learn from successful developments elsewhere. The improvement grid sets out the required management commitment for The Vital Link Improvement Programme, together with a three-tier framework for service development around four themes:

See also Training for advice on courses and accreditation for library staff working with adults with literacy needs.

The toolkit is also designed to support staff working on the BBC RaW campaign (which runs until autumn 2008) and the Six Book Challenge in association with the Costa Book Awards (launched in January 2008). New items are constantly being added to the toolkit, so please keep checking if you do not find what you are looking for on your first visit. Let us know what additional items you would find useful by sending an email to genevieve.clarke@readingagency.org.uk

NB. The Vital Link recognises that a number of terms are in use denoting literacy and numeracy needs, including "Basic skills" "Essential skills" and "Skills for Life". While some of these have defined meanings, providers and libraries have sometimes used them interchangeably in the case studies and these usages have been preserved in this toolkit.

Acronyms in common use when working with libraries and Skills for Life providers.
