Connecting libraries and adult literacy to inspire new readers

Got kids? Get reading! - family reading

Read information on the Vital Link with Parents project which used this book collection, including a film and executive summary.

Having children is a key motivator for adults with low-level literacy skills to get back into learning. Got kids? Get reading! is a new family reading promotion for adults at Entry Level 3 - Level 2 (readability level 9-14) who have children aged 0-7 years. It gives the message that it's good to share books with your children and for them to see you enjoying reading.

Got kids? Get reading! book collection

A booklist to support this promotion was launched in 2004 which has continued to be very popular. This has now been incorporated into the expanded First Choice Books database at www.firstchoicebooks.org.uk. We will also make available an updated booklist which merges the titles originally selected to support the Five Minutes and Got kids? Get reading! promotions.

Got kids? Get reading! screen saver

The Got Kids? Get Reading! screensaver is a great way to flag up the collection in libraries and computer suites. Download it here for free.

Please note: you will need to use Winzip to open the files (this programme is free to download, click Winzip if you do not have it and follow the instructions. You can then come back to these pages to get the screensavers). Your computer may already have Winzip, so when you click to download the screensavers you will simply have to follow the instructions onscreen. It is recommended that you download the programme to your desktop, and then you can open it from there.

Using the Got kids? Get reading! collections

The Got kids? Get reading! collections are aimed at adults with skills gaps who have children under the age of seven, although older children in the family may also be involved. To gain maximum benefit, the collections are best used in the context of family learning or as part of a Skills for Life or literacy course.

A DfES-funded pilot project in 2005 found that as a result of taking part in Got kids? Get reading! activities, both parents and children read more for pleasure and parents said that they intended to go on reading and learning. Many parents and children from the pilot projects joined the library for the first time. Read more about the pilot projects here.

Got kids? Get reading! training

The Vital Link has developed 'Get going with Got kids? Get reading!' - a one day training course aimed at public and school library staff, family learning coordinators and Children's Centre managers. It covers the Got kids? Get reading! pilot project, resources and collections; partnership opportunities and development; developing stock for parents/carers with a basic skills need and reading activities and ideas.
