The Five Minutes reading promotion is aimed at Dads with
a text readability level between 9 - 14 (Entry Level 3 to
Level 2) who have children 0 - 10 years. Five Minutes features
books that Dads will enjoy sharing with their children as
well as reading for themselves. Five Minutes supports work
on The Vital Link, the family-focused part of BBC RaW, the
Family Reading Campaign, Bookstart and Sure Start.
A booklist to support this promotion was launched in autumn 2006 which has proved very popular. This has now been incorporated into the expanded First Choice Books database at www.firstchoicebooks.org.uk. We will also make available an updated booklist which merges the titles originally selected to support the Five Minutes and Got kids? Get reading! promotions.
The dads' titles have been selected for their potential to attract men into picking them up and reading them and so are linked to interests and genres that might appeal to them. There are titles written specifically for emergent readers as well as mainstream titles selected for their accessibility and includes fiction, non-fiction, audio and graphic novel titles.
The children's list is a combination of fiction and non-fiction titles in various formats (picture, board, lift the flap).
All titles on both booklist have been checked against the
Vital Link Stock Selection Criteria and also Nielsen Bookfind
for availability.

older children in the family may also be involved. To gain
maximum benefit, Five Minutes is best used in the context

First Choice Books is an online database
where librarians and tutors can search books by different
themes, genres, titles, author and readability level and see
the stock selection criteria for each title. Fiction, non-fiction,
graphic novels, poetry and children's titles are featured
on the site. Titles can be submitted that you think should
be on the database and fit the stock selection criteria, you
will also be able to see rejected titles. Learners will be
able to submit their own reviews of books they have read.
Titles featured on the database are taken from the First Choice
and the Got kids? Get reading! booklists. The Five Minutes
collection will added to the database shortly. You may also want to look at the Got kids? Get reading! collections for further adult and children's reads.
We are working to identify appropriate titles for this database.
