In 2006 and 2007 The Vital Link created
materials to support the Quick Reads titles, published on World Book Day, which can be used
in any setting with emergent readers.

"I found the suggestions in the resources enormously helpful. They gave me the confidence to go in there and develop my ideas for meaningful activities." Lulu Spink, Army basic skills tutor

Starting with Quick Reads: The Vital Link guide to engaging
new readers offers a range of ways to begin conversations about the Quick Reads and to link the books into your regular
activity with new readers. This 24-page handbook can be
downloaded here or hard copies can be ordered

of each title and an interactive quiz are available at www.quickreadsideas.org.uk
The
introductory file 'Quick Reads: Approaches to reading for
pleasure' outlines the rationale for the design of the learning
materials, and offers activities, ideas and resources for
developing reader knowledge and confidence in the higher
reading skills. You may like to read this first, but it
is not necessary to do so before using resources for individual
titles. The activities are offered to be used completely
flexibly according to the reader audience. They are not
session plans: you can deliver all or part of them, and
shorten, develop, adapt and transfer them to other books
if appropriate. Our aim is to get emergent readers hooked
on books and reading for their own reward, through imaginative,
creative and fun engagement activities.
The learning resources for the second set of Quick Reads, published in May 2006, were designed to work differently from those we published in March 2006. We hope they will assist you in expanding your readers' experiences of texts, so we have demonstrated how the May Quick Reads can be used to link back to the March ones (and vice versa), and how experience with the Quick Reads can be built on to develop reading more widely.
Each file has a theme and uses two of the May titles to explore it. It will be most helpful to read through the file 'Further Approaches to Reading for Pleasure' first; this outlines the approach we have taken, lists all the themes and accompanying books and contains information on the individual titles in order to help reader selection.
