Starbucks

StarbucksStarbucks has worked in partnership with the National Literacy Trust to support the literacy of children in disadvantaged communities since 2001. Their support enables the charity to work directly with children and their families, helping them to acquire the skills they need to develop as a reader and choosing free books to take home to keep.

This summer, in support of our Tell Me a Story campaign they are treating their cardholders to exclusive mini books from Walker Books and the opportunity to win books for their local school.

During National Family Week 2010 (31 May to 6 June) Starbucks cardholders will receive exclusive tasters of Walker Books titles when they visit a Starbucks store. Every time they use their Starbucks card they could win one of ten prizes of book vouchers worth £150 for themselves and for their family, plus a £1000 book hamper to donate to a primary school of their choice. Starbucks want to treat their cardholders, celebrate Starbucks partnership with the National Literacy Trust and encourages customers to support the National Literacy Trust’s new Tell Me a Story campaign.

Walker Books

Walker Books are also supporting our Tell Me a Story campaign by giving away exclusive mini books in partnership with Starbucks UK.  During National Family Week 2010 (31 May to 6 June) Starbucks cardholders will receive exclusive tasters of Walker Books titles when they visit a Starbucks store. Every time they use their Starbucks card they could win one of ten prizes of book vouchers worth £150 for themselves and for their family, plus a £1,000 book hamper to donate to a primary school of their choice.

The mini books from Walker Books that Starbucks cardholders can enjoy are:

  • Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness: The finale to the trilogy, Chaos Walking, aimed at boys aged 14 and above. It is a powerful novel about power, survival and the devastating realities of war.
  • Maisy by Lucy Cousins: Maisy is a mouse and one of the best-loved children’s book characters of all time. A story to enjoy with your children at bedtime or anytime!

This year, in celebration of their 30th birthday, Walker Books have committed to raising £30,000 for the National Literacy Trust, through a series of events: from sponsored runs, to clothes swaps, to book sales.

National Family Week

National Family Week is the UK’s biggest ever celebration of families. The Week aims to encourage families to spend more quality time together, and champions the benefits of a healthy, active and positive family. This year the National Literacy Trust has teamed up with National Family Week to launch the Tell Me a Story campaign on Family Week Story Time on 2 June. The National Literacy Trust and National Family Week are working together to call on families to spend 10 minutes reading with the children in their life.

Family Week Story Time on the 2 June will see thousands of activities to encourage family engagement in learning taking place throughout the country in museums, libraries, Sure Start Centres and other local organisations. Fifty WHSmith stores will host readings, with their 10 largest featuring book signings by some of the country’s favourite authors.
