  • Child Language Development: Learning to talk, (2003), 2nd edition, Sandra Bochner and Jane Jones, Whurr Publishers Ltd: London. This book is concerned with the early stages of language acquisition and is designed for use by early childhood teachers, nursery nurses, special education teachers and others working with children experiencing difficulties in learning to talk. Procedures are described that can be used to assess a child's current skills and plan activities to increase communicative competence.

  • Communication Counts - Speech and Language Difficulties in the Early Years by Fleur Griffiths. This book has good research evidence for changes in language remediation, giving practical guidance for day to day work with children. The feelings and perspectives of families and professionals, as well as children, are also acknowledged and considered. Published by David Fulton Publishers, London (2002).

  • Communication Disability and Literacy Difficulties is part of the I CAN Talk series of papers exploring contemporary issues in children's communication development and disability. It reviews current research and literature on communication disability and literacy difficulties and offer practical evidence-based solutions to inform and support practitioners, parents and policy makers.   • Communications Forum is a charity that brings together organisations concerned with the needs of people with speech and language impairments. The website provides information for those with speech and language difficulties, carers and service providers. It also aims to promote awareness and knowledge of communication impairment.   • I CAN has produced a new Early Talk publication focussing on communication development and disability. It includes information and ideas for practitioners to develop programmes and practices and is designed as a forum for sharing experiences. The first issue was produced in Spring 2006.   • Language Development, Circle Time Sessions To Improve Communication Skills, (second edition, 2003), Marion Nash with Jackie Lowe and Tracey Palmer, David Fulton Publishers. This book offers an inclusive approach to developing children's language and thinking skills and their emotional literacy. It includes games and activities to use in small group sessions for children who are vulnerable in these areas. Children are encouraged to take small steps and build up their confidence gradually, with the aim being to allow them to catch up and keep pace with their peers. It includes a video CD and it is part of the Spirals series. There is also a handbook available with home activities to support key language skills being developed in school.   • Talking Point is a new website developed in partnership between the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, I CAN and AFASIC to provide a national online information service for parents and professionals on the needs of children and young people who have speech and language difficulties. It provides comprehensive and up to date information, and gives access to relevant organisations. There is also a database called Talking Links providing information on regional health and educational organisations that can help children and young people with a communication disibility.
