- Applications
of Attachment Theory to Primary Prevention: A brief introduction
to the Sunderland Programme, by Dr PO Svanberg The
Infant Programme was developed to be a targeted primary
prevention programme, ie assessing interactions between
mother and infant using video, identifying and attempting
to alter the interaction when it was less than optimally
sensitive or attuned. The purpose of the programme is to
increase the proportion of securely attached children through
the application of attachment theory, developmental and
interaction guidance as well as parent-infant psychotherapy.

Attachment
from infancy to adulthood: The major longitudinal studies,
edited by Klaus E. Grossmann, Karin Grossman and Everett
Waters, is published by Guildford Press. The book contains
contributions by almost all the major figures in attachment
research since the 1960s. It presents an interesting mix
of information, pointing to the nature of the longitudinal
studies featured and also their intellectual context...This
book strongly suggests the value of early secure attachment
but also pays attention to methodological and conceptual
issues, as well as to data that challenge the simplistic
assumption that early attachment security leads to lifelong
security.

- Attachment
Handbook for Foster Care and Adoption, by Gillian
Schofield and Mary Beek, British Association for Adoption
& Fostering. The authors have divided the book into three
parts, which are further divided into concise chapters.Part
one starts by explaining the core concepts of attachment
theory. This is followed by descriptions of four attachment
patterns, the factors likely to give rise to them and the
subsequent behaviours children may display. The second part
explores in detail the five dimensions of care giving the
authors consider fundamental to providing a child with a
secure base..Part three is entitled theory and practice. Here
they look at how the theory can be applied to common behaviour
problems, explore the role of social workers and examine
some of the issues raised by contact.

- The Human Voice:
The Story of a Remarkable Talent by Anne Karpf (Bloomsbury,
2006). TTYB has enjoyed reading Anne Karpf's new book, a
highly readable exploration of all aspects of the human
voice, the key to communication and our ability to read
between the emotional lines. This stimulating book covers
the vital role the voice plays in the bonding of mothers
and children, and goes beyond childhood to look at the voice's
psychological, social, emotional and cultural significance.
A book for anybody interested in the power and detail of
communication. For more information visit the Bloomsbury
Publishing website at www.bloomsbury.com
- The International
Attachment Network aims to disseminate and exchange
information about attachment theory and attachment-related
studies. Attachment theory has been defined as a way of
understanding why human beings tend to form specific and
long-lasting relationships with particular others and why
disruptions or conflicts in these relationships can result
in psychological, psycho-somatic and psycho-social disturbance.
These conditions are necessary throughout the life cycle
but are even more important in early childhood as they are
likely to determine in very fundamental ways the course
of further personality development. Find out more at www.attachmentnetwork.org
