Developing language for life

Share your favourite songs and rhymes

Illustration of young girlMusic is a great way to communicate with babies, and singing songs and nursery rhymes is traditionally a soothing and enjoyable experience. Many of us have favourite nursery rhymes from our own childhoods, and today children are growing up with a rich variety of songs, from traditional rhymes to pop songs and ballads. When the singer enjoys singing the song, the baby will enjoy hearing it.

Liz Attenborough, Talk To Your Baby Manager, comments: "I happened to be word perfect in Simon and Garfunkel songs, so they were the ones I sang to my children when they were babies. I was comfortable with the music, so it was an enjoyable experience for us all, alongside using a tape of nursery rhymes to remind me of the words. Wheels on the Bus was a particular favourite."

This survey is looking at the songs and tunes that parents and carers remember from their own childhood, and also the favourites that are enjoyed by babies and young children today.
