The National Year of Reading (NYR) 2008 is a government funded initiative, aiming to put reading at the top of everyone's agenda. The NYR, run by the National Literacy Trust and the Reading Agency, will challenge schools, business, arts, sport and local services to join in. It will be launched in January and public activity will begin in April.
Speaking and listening skills are vital building blocks for learning to read. Many schemes, such as Bookstart and local library initiatives already engage the early years sector in reading. The NYR is a great opportunity to celebrate and develop work further to involve young children and their community in imaginative and inspiring activities centred around books.
