Common acronyms
Many organisations or projects use acronyms, some of which are very similar to another. Below are a few which you might come across in the early years context and also relating to language and communication. Links are also provided where you can find out more information.
AFASIC - Association For All Speech Impaired Children. A UK charity helping children and young people with speech and language difficulties.

ASLTIP - Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice. They provide information on Speech and Language Therapy in the United Kingdom and supports SLTs in independent practice.

CILIP - Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. Early years network - seeks to raise the quality of library services to preschool children and their families.

CLLD - Communication, Language and Literacy Development. The CLLD programme was developed following the Rose Review. It supports the teaching of early literacy, speaking and listening skills, phonics and early reading. www.standards.dcsf.gov.uk/clld/
CWDC - Children's Workforce Development Council. Aims to improve outcomes for children and young people by enhancing the role of the workforce, to strengthen the workforce by ensuring that all workers have the appropriate skills and qualifications, to encourage integration while continuing to value the distinctiveness of each profession and to promote a vision of the children's workforce as integrated, satisfying and valuable

ECAT - Every Child a Talker. A government funded initiative to provide training and support for early years practitioners on early language development.

ELC - Early Language Consultant. Appointed specifically to work with ECAT settings to make sure that they develop the very best early language provision so that every child is a talker. The ELC has specialist knowledge and experience relating to children's early language development and a thorough understanding of early years pedagogy.
ELLP - Early Language Lead Practitioner. All settings identified by the local authority for ECAT funding will develop a member of staff to become the Early Language Lead Practitioner. The ELLP's role is to act as an ambassador for Every Child a Talker and to promote the development of expertise amongst the staff within their setting and the linked setting.
ELPP – Early Learning Partnership Project. A project funded by the previous DfES to engage parents whose children are at risk of learning delay through a range of approaches.

EPPE - Effective Provision of Pre-School Education Project. Focuses on the progress and development of 3,000 children from entering pre-school to the end of Key Stage Two in primary school. Funded by the Department for Education and Skills.

Also: EPPE 3-11 (The Effective Pre-School and Primary Education 3-11 project and EPPSE 3-14 (The Effective Pre-School, Primary and Secondary Education Project) which extend on the original study of the same 3,000 children through to the end of KS3 (age 14) in secondary school.
EYFS – Early Years Foundation Stage . A framework from the DfES outlining the standards for learning aged 0-5. This will become a statutory requirement by September 2008.

EYP – See EYPS
EYPS – Early Years Professional Status. A status, rather than a qualification that recognises the expertise of an early years practitioner and professional leader. Once obtained the practitioner becomes an Early Years Professional (EYP).

HLPP – Health Led Parenting Support Project. A new initiative from the government based on the US Nurse-Family Partnership Project (NFP).

NAPP- National Academy for Parenting Practitioners. A government funded collaborative project to provide training and research for those who work with parents. As of April 2010, their research and workforce developments will be split between King's College London and the Children's Workforce Development Council rather than existing as a stand-alone project.

PAFT – Parents as First Teachers. They train professionals to work on a one to one basis with parents and their children, pre-birth to 5 years, using the Parents as Teachers programme delivered in the home or other appropriate setting.

PEAL – Parents, Early Years and Learning . This is a consortium project funded by the DfES, to encourage parents to be involved with their children’s early learning and development.

PEEP – Peers Early Education Partnership. PEEP supports parents and carers in their role as children’s first and most important educators . It also provides training and support for practitioners working with families.

PPEL – Parents as Partners in Early Learning . As part of the EYFS, a project that recognises the importance of parents in their children’s learning.

RCSLT – Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. To represent speech and language therapists and support workers, promote excellence in practice and influence health, education and social care policies.

SEAD– Social and Emotional Aspects of Development A government funded programme (announced July 08) to provide materials to increase practitioner knowledge of SEAD. It brings togther the DCSF's Personal, Social and Emotional Development materials and Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) into a more structured package of support for practitioners working in the early years sector.
