£4 million to fund free nursery places in 15 areas
1 Apr 2011
From 1 April 2011 15 local authorities will receive £4 million in funding from the Government to expand their provision of early learning and childcare for the most disadvantaged two-year-olds in their area.
The funding is part of a trail that is testing:
- ways to make sure that enough nursery places and staff are available to effectively provide the provision
- ways to offer the 15 free hours more flexibly to best support parents
Sarah Teather, Children’s Minister, said:
High quality early education is the foundation of a child’s healthy development and future success at school and beyond. It’s simply not good enough that children from poorer families are less likely to access good quality early education than their wealthier peers – even though they stand to benefit the most.
