Let's explore... dolls and dolls houses

An article in Nursery World explored how different modes of play such as object play, pretend play, socio-dramatic play, language play and physical play are all incorporated into doll play.
Linked into enabling environments in the EYFS, the article explored different ways in which settings could enhance the home corners of settings. Ideas included developing the area to help children extend their play by adding different dolls, dolls clothes, washing lines, pegs, cradles, cots, nappies, feeding cups, bowls and bottles. It was also suggested that adults could help children in role play through observations, asking open-ended conversations, modelling the use of resources, and acting in role as a health visitor or parent.
Other ideas included making a construction area with assorted images of homes, for sale signs, lorries and furniture with adults supporting through introducing language of measures, such as bigger than and smaller than. Also, making a small world play area, with assorted dolls, homes, and furniture, giving children opportunities to express themselves through imaginative play and initiate conversations.
