Community of Research and Practice

The Talk To Your Baby Community of Research and Practice is an online network open to everyone who shares our interest in the development of young children’s speech, language, and communication. It brings together researchers and academics who are particularly interested in the development of theory, investigation and enquiry, with practitioners who are working with children and families to promote high-quality practice at home, in early years settings, and across local communities.

If you think the community might be of interest to you, then it probably is. If you’d like to participate, you need register as a user of our website and create a user profile. This is free of charge. If you already have a username and password for our site, you simply need to log in. Then you will be able to contribute to the discussion threads below.

Where next for the national year of communication?

By Cathy Hamer. Posted on 15 Aug 2011 at 19:45

Jean Gross, Communication Champion, is wondering what people have found useful in the Hello campaign so far. She's keen to know how you've used it in practice. Also 'what should we be focusing on the in last four months?' Any views?

This year has really raised the profile of communication. What is needed now is to set in motion initiatives that will be sef=lf sustaining.

Suggest you look out for the special supplement in next week's Times Educational Supplement. It's titled "Talk, Listen and Take Part: Better learning, better behaviour, better communication" and is produced in conjunction with The Communication Champion, BT and The Communication Trust.

    Hi
I'm glad to hear that the national year of communciaiton has raised the profile. Really good point about sustainability .

We are thinking hard about this and there will be shortly a paper on the legacy of the year on my website http://www.thecommunicationcouncil.org/council/ under the September council meeting papers . Key is the multiagancy groups in local areas, whch in some cases were already there but in some cases were prompted by the Year- let's hope these continue to meet and plan.

Thanks Jean. I look forwards to reading your paper when its available. I wonder if people could give examples of the multiagency groups in their local areas in oder to inspire others. I know there's excellent work going on in Nottinghamshire for example and they'll be sharing this at the Talk To Your Baby conference on 4th Nov.

I come from Jersey and was therefore not part of the ECaT programme. We have also been concerned with the decline in communication skills of Foundation Stage children and 2 government depts have worked together and created a programme called 'Langauge for Life'. This is led jointly be a speech therapist and myself as Advisory Teacher. It is a 5x 2hour training plus after session 2, participants are videoed in their workplace using the startegies learnt on the course and a relection with the speech therapist immediately follows this.
The course have proved very successful and over 100 have taken part. It's impact practice has been amazing.we are now looking to extend this course to under 3's practitioners in the new year.
The 'Hello' website has enriched our course and I know that many access this regularly. It would be a shame for it not to continue as people are familiar with it now..
It's difficult to know where next from 'Year of Communication' . I will keep thinking! I am at the conference on Nov 4th and keen to link up with others.
