In memoriam giving

Liz James was Head of English at The Queen Katherine School in Kendal, one of our Reading Champions schools. Liz was an inspiration to her students, colleagues and friends as well as a strong supporter of literacy.

Sadly, Liz died last year, aged only twenty-nine. As a tribute to their teacher, The Queen Katherine School created an anthology of poetry and artwork in her memory.

The school invited poets John Hegley and Emma Jones to run a series of workshops around the theme of ‘things that inspire us’. The workshops helped to ignite the initial creative spark in the pupils and the poems that came out of these workshops were published in an anthology entitled Lick Your Plate Clean – a line from one of the pupil’s poems and a symbol of Liz’s own committed approach to life.

Liz believed in the idea of ‘keeping’ a story but passing on the book, so readers are encouraged to read the book, sign one of the pages at the back of the book or write a comment, and then leave it in a public place for others to be inspired.

Copies of Lick Your Plate Clean are available from the Queen Katherine School, priced £3.00 plus p+p. If you would like to purchase a copy please send an email with your details to david.brown@queenkatherine.org.

All proceeds above costs raised for the publishing of this book were kindly donated to the National Literacy Trust. We would like to thank The Queen Katherine School for their valued support, not only through this project but also through their in memoriam donation.

Donate to the NLT in memory of a loved one

'In memoriam’ donations are a positive way to celebrate the life of a friend or relative by giving a gift in their memory to a cause that was important to them.

The National Literacy Trust will use your gift to ensure we continue to transform lives through literacy by enabling individuals to fulfil their potential.

How to donate in memoriam

If you would like to give in memory of a friend or relative:

  • You can make the arrangements through a funeral director.
  • You can donate online here.  Please confirm the name of the person your gift is celebrating, as well as you name and the details of your gift so that we can acknowledge your gift appropriately.
  • Alternatively, please send any donations, along with the name of the person in whose memory the donations are collected, to: The National Literacy Trust, Freepost RRLH-HGXT-ZSJB, 68 South Lambeth Road, London SW8 1RL.  Please make all cheques payable to ‘The National Literacy Trust’.

We will reply with thanks for your kind support unless otherwise requested.

Collection envelopes

If you are organising a memorial service, we can provide collection envelopes that make it easy for those attending the service to make donations. Please email us at the address below.

Requesting donations in your memory

If you would prefer donations to floral tributes, it is a good idea to let your executors know of your wishes, or to include it in the details about your funeral. See ‘Remember us in your will’.

If you would like to know more about how 'in memoriam’ donations help, or would like any further information, please email diana.stewart@literacytrust.org.uk
