Premier League Reading Stars

Premier League Reading Stars is a reading intervention that is proven to raise reading levels for under-achieving pupils from Y5/6. Our evaluation shows that 3 out of 4 children make at least 6 months’ progress in reading in just 10 weeks, with 1 child in 3 making a year’s progress, or more.

The intervention forms part of the free Premier League Primary Stars English offer to all primary schools in England and Wales. The National Literacy Trust has written the content for the programme, which can be downloaded for free from the Premier League Primary Stars website.

Evaluation evidence

Evaluation from 2014/15 programme showed that after participating:

  • 77% of PLRS pupils agreed with the statement “I’m proud that I’m a reader”
  • Reading enjoyment increased from 44% before to 59%
  • Reading confidence increased from 63% before to 80%

In 2014 we undertook an in-depth research study into the impact of the programme. Our evaluation shows:

  • 3 out of 4 children make at least 6 months’ progress in reading in just 10 weeks
  • 1 child in 3 makes a year’s progress, or more
  • The number of children who say they enjoy reading "very much" is more than double
  • The number of children who read everyday is more than double
  • 7 out of 10 say that they are now proud to be readers
  • Over half visit a library as a result of the programme and a third of participants become library members
  • Half say that as a result of taking part they have a favourite author
  • Nearly two thirds of participants say that seeing Premier League footballers read made them want to read more

Premier League Reading Stars helps to close the gap in reading ability between those who are underachieving and those who are reading at the expected level. This group often includes a high proportion of boys and children eligible for free school meals.

“Without it I honestly believe that we would have continually struggled to engage the children in reading, and certainly wouldn’t have made it as fun… it really has made a massive difference in the way that the boys view reading now.”

Subject Leader of English

“The Premier League Reading Stars scheme has had a very positive impact on the group of pupils we targeted. The data impact has been measurable and this was highlighted by our recent OFSTED report.  It was a fine example of a high impact intervention which was recognised and applauded by the inspectors.”
