Sport and literacy

Our proven sport and literacy programmes inspire young people to improve their literacy skills through sport-themed activities and by working with sporting personalities.

  • develop partnerships with UK sporting organisations
  • channel the excitement and energy of sports like football, cricket, rugby and tennis
  • create high-quality classroom and community based programmes
  • produce inspirational online content to engage students, teachers and parents.

Why sport and literacy?

Since 2002 we have seen the impact that sports literacy programmes can have.

Sport provides the motivation that many students thrive on by bringing together areas of a child’s character development including:

  • resilience
  • aspiration
  • hard work
  • practice
  • team working
  • problem solving.

The proven literacy impact of our work means that schools and communities choose to deliver our programmes time and time again.

Our programmes

All of our schools programmes are directly linked to the national curriculum and have clearly defined outcomes. We develop content with experienced teachers to guarantee relevance and the highest levels of quality.

So far our work has focused on football with our flagship programme Premier League Reading Stars (PLRS), a reading intervention aimed at reluctant readers. PLRS now forms a part of Premier League Primary Stars, a brand new online resource for primary schools.

For secondary schools we are also working with the Football Association on new activities and developing a new programme, Skills Academy, which uses sport and other skill based fun to help new starters keep up with their peers.

Other sports

We are developing a number of other programmes which will focus on other sports so watch this space as we will be announcing more details soon.

Express your interest to be told when new resources are available.
