More informaiton on truancy and school exclusions
Rathbone is a national organisation giving young people who
are experiencing significant disadvantages the right opportunities
to learn and to achieve. Rathbone operates through 4 strands
of work: Choices for under 16's, Pre-apprenticeship (e2e,
SkillBuild and Get Ready for Work), Apprenticeships and Youth
Outreach work. Rathbone has over 70 centres in England, Scotland
and Wales and works on an annual basis with more than 12000
learners.
Working in partnership with schools, educational social workers
and parents, Choices staff go into schools with the ultimate
aim of helping the young people into employment. They conduct
an assessment of the young person's skills and abilities,
help them decide what employment they would like to pursue,
and support them to achieve this through offering training
and work placements. Each young person has a Training Adviser
to work with them. Programmes are flexible, ranging from one
to five days per week and taking place both in schools and
in the Rathbone centres, where the young people have access
to literacy, numeracy and ICT classes and help with personal
development. Local Education Authorities provide part of the
funding for the programmes.
Of around 1000 young people to have participated in Choices
programmes, 76% have progressed into some form of training,
education or employment, and there is an 85% average retention
rate in the programmes. Ofsted monitored the programmes in
April 2002 and concluded that "Rathbone is effective
in targeting young people who are engaged in high-risk behaviour
and are significantly at risk of social exclusion."
