Literacy changes lives

Priority Steps to Inclusion: Addressing underachievement, truancy & exclusion at Key Stage 3 & 4
John Huskins, First published 2001. £25 + £4 p&p.

Young people - main page

This handbook is a useful resource for those working with disaffected young people. It was designed to support work in schools by learning mentors, teachers and others working to address inclusion and underachievement. The focus is on how to motivate students to want to learn, and encourage the development of the social and study skills which they need in order to fit into, and benefit from, classroom learning.

The author applies youth work principles to similar work in schools at Key Stages 3 and 4. The book provides a useful analysis of students' needs, identification of the degree of student risk, and principles of learning, as well as useful chapters on the range of approaches to improve students' development, including the ASDAN awards and programmes. In shedding light on the wider strategies for dealing with low self-esteem and disaffection among young people, its easily accessible style will appeal to a wide audience.
