The National Literacy Association has been working in partnership
with the Who Cares? Trust to target children in care. The
Right to Read campaign,
in partnership with selected local authorities including Blackburn,
Islington, Kirklees, St Helens and Somerset, aims to ensure
that young people in care have access to books.
This has been supported by resources such as Breaking
their Fall, a video and magazine on the issues surrounding
literacy and children in care, and Believe
in me, a free publication for designated teachers. It
includes discussion of the issues affecting children and young
people in care, case studies, suggestions for using ICT ,
the transition from primary to secondary school, a glossary
of terms, a directory of relevant organisations and suggested
reading.
An initiative similar to Right to Read, called Looking
after literacy, was run in Kent.
The partnership has also focused on writing, and has developed
a series of publications under the banner Write All About
It, aimed directly at children and young people to encourage
them to develop their writing skills. These include:
- A supplement in the October 2001 Who Cares? magazine,
entitled Poetry for Fun, including interviews with
published poets, tips for finding inspiration, how to make
a start in writing poetry and a poetry writing competition,
with the winning entries being published on a poetry poster
- A booklet for all 8 to 12-year-olds in public care, sent
out in Feburary 2002, called Writing for Fun, to
demonstrate the kinds of writing they might like to try
