Birmingham Core Skills Partnership exists as part of Birmingham's
wider strategy to raise levels, and exceed, national targets
of literacy, numeracy and supporting IT skills. The partnership
works through key groups, including pre-school children, schools,
young adults, the unemployed, employers and volunteers. Partners
are Birmingham Voluntary Services Council, Birmingham and
Solihull Learning and Skills Council and Birmingham City Council.
Family literacy is approached as part of Birmingham LEA's
family learning strategy to bring a city-wide approach to
working with families that links to the schools effectiveness,
family support and social inclusion agendas. A wide range
of organisations provide support to families via schools,
families in hostels and refugees, through community and faith
networks and neighbourhood nurseries. Family literacy activities
include Bookstart, Inspire, Keeping Up with the Children and
intensive family literacy and numeracy courses.
Additional family literacy support and opportunities are
provided to young families in areas where children's skills
on entry to nursery and school are lower than average. This
work is focused on health centres, clinics and day nurseries,
supported by the involvement of the library service to encourage
more families to enjoy the pleasure of books and visit the
city's libraries.
