Department for Education and Skills, July 2002, reference
PLFSM1
The ten Skills for Life Pathfinders were established to test
out the standards, curriculum and national tests for the new
adult basic skills strategy. Nine of them were area specific
and the tenth covered basic skills provision in the prison
service. Around 9,500 learners with the full range of basic
skills needs took part in Pathfinder programmes. Their response
to the new curriculum, and even the national tests, was very
positive. While practitioners would have preferred a longer
timescale to take on the new materials and prepare and develop
the more demanding approaches, there was recognition of the
need to maintain the momentum of the Skills for Life strategy.
The new curriculum was seen as providing a consistent framework
at a practical level allowing teachers to plan lessons mapped
to the national standards.
