Active Citizens – a professional development and social action opportunity
Following a successful programme last year, the National Literacy Trust has once again been invited by the British Council to take part in Active Citizens, an exciting global initiative, with a focus this year on learning around boys’ literacy.
What are we offering?
- Free training. Up to five days of British Council accredited Professional Development aimed at enhancing the leadership, inter-cultural and project management skills of those working on boys’ literacy projects , with the aim of empowering, inspiring and motivating participants to lead effective, sustainable change. Training will take place in London in December 2012.
- An opportunity to meet others working in the field to increase individual and organisation knowledge at a local, national and global level of the factors behind boys' engagement in literacy
- The chance to take part in a funded study visit within the UK to learn from similar social action projects.
Who can take part?
We are no longer looking for people to become Active Citizens this year.
We have identified 30 individuals who are working with, or would like to work with, groups of boys to improve their literacy skills and motivation around reading.
They come from a range of backgrounds, including teachers, library staff, local authority managers and project coordinators from all parts of the UK.
What is expected of an Active Citizen?
- Attendance at London-based training sessions in December 2012 (dates tbc).
- To use this training to enhance your existing project, or use it for a new social action project with a focus on boys’ literacy by end of March 2013.
- A short report outlining how your project has gone and how the training helped you.
What is paid for and what isn’t?
The programme will pay for:
- Active Citizens training
- A UK visit in January / February 2012 for up to three Active Citizens.
The programme won’t pay for:
Time, travel, accommodation and meals (aside from lunch). An extremely limited amount of money has been reserved to contribute towards essential travel and accommodation costs for anyone who would not be able to attend without assistance.
More about the British Council’s Active Citizens programme
The British Council’s Active Citizens programme is a community empowerment and social action programme that builds lasting partnerships between communities in the UK and others around the world. Through a programme of training, community development and international exchange, Active Citizens aims to equip community leaders with the intercultural values and skills needed to help them engage with and build meaningful links with other cultures.

If the Active Citizens programme didn’t exist, we wouldn’t be able to deliver local social action with a global perspective and impact.
