Primary competition: Create a sidekick

Dorko image copyright (c) The Etherington Brothers 2011

The Etherington Brothers’ character Dorko needs a sidekick to accompany him on his adventures. Pupils enter the competition by creating and drawing a new character to act as Dorko’s sidekick, then writing a passage of text of no more than 250-300 words describing the first meeting between the two characters.

What are we looking for?

A high quality entry will:

  • be creative and original
  • be well thought-out. Have your pupils thought about the “back story” of their sidekick character: where they come from, what their personality is like, what powers or talents they might have, how they react to people and situations?
  • show a good use of language, with engaging description and dialogue.

Where does this competition fit in at school?

This could make a great classroom activity in an English or Art lesson, or a fun project for a lunchtime or after-school club.

Members of our Schools Network can access a toolkit for pupils on developing characters to use in school. Download.

How many pupils can enter from each school?

Schools can submit as many entries as they like, but each entry must be from an individual pupil.
