National Literacy Trust and Nursery World survey: Investigating communication, literacy and language development in the early years sector

In May 2011 Nursery World and the National Literacy Trust launched its language development survey to celebrate Hello; the national year of communication. The National Literacy Trust teamed up with Nursery World to carry out research into the sector’s support for children’s language and literacy development. 221 early years professionals participated in the survey, which was online from April to May 2011. The research found that there is a great awareness of language and literacy issues in the early years sector and widespread commitment to supporting them. However, the research also shows that there are major concerns about the support available to practitioners, which could be exacerbated by potential cutbacks in the sector.
