Young People's Reading and Writing: An in-depth study focusing on enjoyment, behaviour, attitudes and attainment

At the end of 2009, over 17,000 pupils took part in our study of children and young people's reading and writing attitudes, behaviours and attainment. Reports from the research have attracted media attention over the last year on specific issues including book ownership, a widening gender achievement gap and family involvement in literacy. You can now read our report on the full range of findings.

The report includes information on:

  • How much young people enjoy reading and writing
  • What types of text they read and write, and how often
  • How good a reader and writer they think they are
  • What they think about reading and writing
  • How these are related to attainment
  • How reading enjoyment, attitudes and behaviour in 2010 compare with reading enjoyment, attitudes and behaviour from 2005.
