The gender gap in educational attainment in India:
How much can be explained
A common explanation of the gender gap in developing countries
is the differential treatment of sons and daughters in their society.
This paper tests this explanation for India using data collected in
urban Uttar Pradesh in 1995. The gender gap in education attainment
is decomposed into a part that is explained by men and women's differential
characteristics and one that is not so explained. It shows that girls
are differentially treated in the intra-household allocation of education
and explores the individual factors that are most responsible for such
differential treatment
