General

"Reading Connects is a marvellous campaign which we welcome with open arms. The project will assist us in furthering our strategy to improve transition between primary and secondary schools and encourage a culture of independent reading amongst our learners." Mike Butler, headteacher, Djanogly City Academy, Nottingham

"Reading Connects has helped us think about our school-based initiatives, like parent groups and reading circles, in a more coherent way. It links with many aspirations contained within our school improvement plan and Every Child Matters. Promoting reading for pleasure is key to raising standards; it is the only guaranteed way of ensuring children and young people continue to be lifelong learners." - Anita Wright, headteacher, Woodmansterne Primary School, London Borough of Lambeth

"Thanks to Reading Connects for making me give some thought to ways of making reading important to the children."

"The Reading Connects focus has raised the profile of reading within the school and there are now more opportunities for children to not only learn to read but to read to learn, as well as seeing reading as a pleasurable activity which opens doors to the world." Teacher (August 2006)

"It has helped us to get all the staff involved in more actively promoting the joy of reading. We now have a list of non-negotiables for each classroom." Teacher (July 2006)

"Reading Connects is a constant reminder of what we are trying to achieve and helps to keep that in my mind and the mind of others." Teacher (July 2006)

"Just being a Reading Connects school feels good! I am sure that all the ideas that we want to implement will come eventually." Teacher (August 2006)

"Our Reading Connects activities have helped our pupils to feel even more involved in the school community." Teacher (July 2006)

"The ability to quote from the successes of other Reading Connects schools adds weight to any discussion about the role of reading. It means that WE MEAN BUSINESS!" Teacher (July 2006)

The audit process

"The audit process was simple, easy to manage and acknowledged what we were already doing. So many awards are paper-chasing, time-consuming mechanisms that can actually prevent a school from doing what it's meant to be doing - not so Reading Connects."

"The audit process was in itself really useful. I thought we already did quite a lot to promote reading for pleasure in our school but the audit gave me new ideas and inspiration."

"The audit process is excellent, we will use it as an ongoing guide, as we develop as a Reading Connects school." Teacher (July 2006)

"The audit process has given us the opportunity to evaluate our current good practice." Teacher (July 2006)

Practical ideas

"Thank you for some brilliant ideas for promoting reading for pleasure in school. I'm certainly going to give some of them a go."

"I was feeling stagnant...Thanks for the new ideas."

"The range of achievable ideas meant all my colleagues are now on board."

"It was re-assuring that lots of the suggestions are already part of our usual classroom practice across the school, but some ideas we had not thought of and will now consider. Thanks again."

Resources

"I was very impressed with the resources offered on the Reading Connects website and would urge every school to register. I can only say to those who work with children of any age and want to encourage the love of books to log on to your site and get searching. The ideas and help are there. USE THEM."

"Reading Connects is a really important initiative. The website is full of ideas and is easy to navigate. Well done the DfES."
