How do I join Reading Connects?
Joining Reading Connects is free and simple and is for both primary and secondary schools. Just click on Join Reading Connects to access the form. It is a two step process:
Step 1: Complete the Reading Connects audit (optional) and create two action points.
Step 2: Fill out the online joining form and enter your two action points.
I am an independent/supplementary school, can I still join?
Yes. You will see independent and supplementary schools as categories on the drop down list when you sign up.
How much does it cost to join Reading Connects?
Reading Connects is funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and therefore it is free for schools and partners to join the initiative and benefit from all of the resources we produce.
How do I know if my school is already a Reading Connects school?
Using the Search your LA link in the left-hand menu of the website, you can click through to your local authority to find all the schools in your area that have joined the initiative.
What is the Reading Connects audit?
The audit is available to to complete online or it can be found in the Reading Connects booklet which can be downloaded. It is a simple self-evaluation tool that encourages schools to look at their current reading for pleasure provision and set targets to improve. It is an optional step for joining Reading Connects. Schools do not need to send us the audit as it is for their benefit only - we will not be checking up! The audit is intended for staff to use as an evaluation tool, not pupils. What is a Reading Connects partner?
Many educational institutions and authorities are actively supporting Reading Connects by promoting our key messages, ordering bulk copies of materials and encouraging schools to join us. We recognise this support and have created a special type of membership: Reading Connects partners. Schools do not fall into the partner category. Find out more about Reading Connects partners

Click on the Search your LA link in the left-hand menu on the website and follow the instructions on the page.
I’ve joined Reading Connects, what do I do now?
You can use Reading Connects in two different ways. Quite simply, you may like to look for inspiration in the form of case studies, practical ideas and resources in the different themed areas listed in the navigation menu on the left of this page. However, you may want to implement the Reading Connects model, which aims to create cultural change within schools. This is a more long-term approach, which uses the practical ideas and case studies mentioned above, but which places them in a strategic framework. Find out more about the Reading Connects model.

What should I receive once I have joined?
When you sign up to Reading Connects as a school or as a partner, you should receive a welcome email (including links to the logos online), and a welcome pack by post. The welcome pack includes a Reading Connects handbook, the family involvement toolkit and your certificate. If you do not receive a welcome email automatically on joining, please contact us on 020 7820 6267 as this may mean that your email address has not worked.
Welcome packs are sent out every 10 working days. If you have not received your welcome pack, please email hannah.maclellan@literacytrust.org.uk.
Who is the Reading Connects booklet for?
The Reading Connects booklet is an introduction to the Reading Connects approach. It contains the Reading Connects audit. It is intended for school staff and anyone interested in becoming a Reading Connects partner.
How do I order the Reading Connects booklet?
Email hannah.maclellan@literacytrust.org.uk to request a copy of the Reading Connects booklet (specifying primary or secondary). The Reading Connects audit (for staff) is contained within the invitation booklet.
How do I order the Reading Connects family involvement toolkit?
You need to be a Reading Connects school or partner to receive a hard copy of the Family involvement toolkit. If you have joined since January 2007, you should have been sent the toolkit as part of your welcome pack, if not please email hannah.maclellan@literacytrust.org.uk. You can also download the family involvement toolkit as a pdf.
I have received my welcome pack by post (handbook, family involvement toolkit and certificate), but no welcome email, what should I do?
If you have not received your welcome email, this probably means that we have experienced problems with your email address. Please contact hannah.maclellan@literacytrust.org.uk or call 020 7820 6267 if this is the case.
I have joined Reading Connects, received the welcome email and welcome pack, but have heard nothing since, is this normal?
Reading Connects sends out email newsletters to schools and partners once a month. If you have never received one of these newsletters, email hannah.maclellan@literacytrust.org.uk.
How often is the Celebrating Reading Connects magazine published?
The Celebrating Reading Connects magazine was a one-off publication and is not produced regularly. You can still download the Celebrating Reading Connects magazine.

How do I correct a typo in my school's details?
If you have submitted your join form and made an error when entering your school's details, please email hannah.maclellan@literacytrust.org.uk. It is not possible for schools to change their own details manually.
What is a Reading Connects blog?
A Reading Connects blog (web log or public online diary) is an online facility for Reading Connects schools to share their good practice and practical ideas, as well as the barriers they have faced and strategies for overcoming them. It exists for schools to network directly with each other. You can access your school’s blog through the Use your blog link in the left hand menu of the website.
How do I use the Reading Connects blog and future events function?
You must join Reading Connects to have access to your blog. You will need your username and password to use your blog. If you do not have these details, please email hannah.maclellan@literacytrust.org.uk. Once you have logged in, follow the instructions on the screen to write your blog.
Where do I send my practical ideas so that I can share our good practice?
If you have a great idea for developing a school reading culture, we would like you to share it with us. The Reading Connects blog allows you to communicate your good practice with other member schools. You can also email your idea to sarah.osborne@literacytrust.org.uk and it could be put on the case studies section of the website.
How do I access the Reading Connects logos?
If you are a Reading Connects school or partner and would like to access the Reading Connects logo, visit the logos page. The link to these logos is also in the welcome email that you should have received. If you have not received this email, please contact hannah.maclellan@literacytrust.org.uk.

Do you give out funding?
Reading Connects is delivered by the National Literacy Trust, which is an independent charity. It does not give out any funding. For information on sources of funding visit the funding page.
How can I get a local author/storyteller or celebrity to visit my school?
Visit the practical ideas section on events, reading groups and buddying.
When is the Reading Connects school of the year competition?
The competition is held annually and normally opens after the Easter holidays. The winners, one primary and one secondary, are announced in July. The competition is open to all Reading Connects schools and is free to enter. Exact dates will be advertised online and in the email newsletter near to Easter.

What is the difference between Reading Connects and Reading Champions, and can I join both?
Reading Connects supports schools in building a whole-school reading community, which involves all members of staff, the local community, families and pupils. Reading Champions specifically uses the motivational power of male reading role models to inspire other boys and men to read more. Many schools join both and run the two projects alongside each other.
