What is Reading Connects?

Reading Connects, a DCSF-funded National Literacy Trust initiative, supports primary and secondary schools in developing their own whole-school reading culture. Reading Connects is more of an ethos, than a project. It encourages schools to embed a holistic creative approach to promoting reading for pleasure into their policies, vision and good practice, integrating the following elements:
  1. promoting reading for pleasure at the heart of the school's policy to raise standards and promote enjoyment in learning
  2. involving all members of staff, including catering staff, the caretaker, governors and parent groups in promoting reading
  3. working in partnership with pupils' families to encourage reading in the home
  4. linking up with the local community and other schools to develop a local coordinated approach to promoting reading for pleasure
  5. making reading as visible as possible within the school environment
  6. learning from and sharing their good practice with the Reading Connects network of schools and organisations

Who is Reading Connects for?

Reading Connects target audience is principally primary and secondary schools. However, other organisations that can join the Reading Connects network include: supplementary schools, sporting organisations, post-16 colleges, nursery schools, pre-schools and Children's Centres.

Furthermore, we also encourage primary and secondary strategy consultants, School Library Services and colleagues from LAs to sign up as Reading Connects partners and join the Reading Connects network. To find out more about becoming a Reading Connects partner, visit the partner pages of this website.

The Reading Connects website

Cartoon image of a computer reading a bookThe Reading Connects website is free to use and can be accessed by everyone. All schools are offered the tools they need to get started on developing a whole-school approach to reading for pleasure or build on existing good practice. It features practical tried-and-tested ideas, resources, case studies and also gives you the opportunity to find out about Reading Connects in your local authority. As the Reading Connects network continues to grow, so does the website, so keep an eye on the What's new section on the front page for updates and news.

In addition to just using the website, schools are encouraged to sign up and become a Reading Connects school.

In each authority Reading Connects has a network of local authority partners who also support schools in building a whole-school reading community.
