Practical idea - Home language

15 Jan 2010

Encourage families whose home language is not English to talk to their child as much as possible in their home language.

In your setting give children 'time out' from English and space to think their own thoughts.

Provide dual language books and signage.  Your local library service will be able to help with loaning dual language books to your setting. Involve parents and carers in helping to create the dual language signage you need for your setting, wherever possible.

Finally be aware that some languages are aural and therefore families may speak but not read their own language.
