Practical idea - Listening games
12 Feb 2010
There are many resources being produced that support children's speaking and listening skills. If you don't have the budget to spend on new equipment try these activities.
- ‘Simon says’ and ‘peekaboo’ are great games even for babies - who will do what you do, even poking out their tongue when you do, when they are just a few months old.
- Play syllable games by clapping out the syllables in a name, or long words - for example, animals at the zoo - el-e-phant or any-eat-er. Breaking up words is also an important pre-reading skill.
- Download sound clips for children to identify. These could be animal noises or everyday sounds like the washing machine or a car engine.
