Policy
The National Literacy Trust has a commitment to evidence-based policy in order to empower learners of all ages and support professionals. Our work both supports the development of high quality national and local policy and helps bring policy to practitioners.
Policy is essential as the mechanism through which the local and national agenda for literacy is articulated. The development of Government and local authority policy impacts all areas of literacy from pedagogy in schools, through strategic direction of libraries, to budgets for adult basic skills programmes.
At its best policy links good research with best practice, drawing on a wide range of influences to develop a framework to ensure effective outcomes for all. At its worst policy can be seen as a hindrance preventing practitioners and professionals from effectively doing their job.
