Thousands of people dressed as Where's Wally? descend on London park to support literacy

25 Mar 2013

Where's Wally fun run1200 supporters participated in our Where’s Wally? fun run on Sunday 24 March 2013 despite arctic weather conditions. The event raised vital funds to support children living in some of the most deprived areas of the UK. Participants ran either 5k or 10k and were provided with an official stripy Where’s Wally? costume. So far, £82,000 has been raised for our charity.

Jonathan Douglas, Director of the National Literacy Trust said:

We’re all so grateful for the overwhelming support and reaction from the public for our first fun run. A vast array of people took part, from as far across the world as Thailand! We know that if you can read, you can succeed. We want the public to help us give more children a route out of poverty. At this time of unprecedented economic hardship, our charity’s work has never been so necessary.

Secondary school teacher and campaign supporter Matthew Lewis ran the 10K. He says children’s literacy is a subject that is close to his heart:

The National Literacy Trust works in some of the UK’s most deprived communities helping children to improve their skills. The Where’s Wally? fun run is a brilliant way to raise public awareness of the work carried out by the charity.

The money raised could help us to provide books and storytelling events for children from low-income homes and one-to-one support for parents unconfident with literacy.

It’s not too late to make a contribution to the fun run. You can still sponsor the National Literacy Trust team. Alternatively, sign up to the mailing list to find out about future events.
