Road to WrestleMania: the results are in!
12 Dec 2012
The Decapitator….Fierce Florence…Kromon Stone…Nitro…just a few of the wonderful characters created by pupils all over the UK for their entries into the National Literacy Trust and WWE’s Road to WrestleMania competition.
The competition engaged children in writing by tapping into something that is hugely popular amongst many children and young people; the world of WWE. Pupils were challenged to take on the role of a manager of an up and coming sports entertainer, completing a number of literacy-based tasks to transform their client into a world-class WWE Superstar or Diva. These tasks included creating a character and writing instructions for their big entrance into the ring.
Pupils who successfully completed all of the Road to WrestleMania tasks were entered into a national prize draw to win the prize of a lifetime – a night as a Guest Manager at a WWE UK live event, mingling backstage with the stars of the show and escorting one of them to the ring.
Road to WrestleMania had a great impact in schools taking part. One teacher commented:
“The class have absolutely loved the competition. Some of them find writing a bit of a challenge but they all feel they have really achieved something over the last few weeks which is great. Our Acting Head Teacher has been so impressed she has asked us to display the work in our main reception area!”
The lucky winner of the competition is William, a Year 5 pupil from St Martin’s CofE Primary School in the West Midlands. He said:
"I felt joyful and amazed really.... I didn't think that out of all the people who entered I'd win! My favourite task was the first one because it got my artistic side out which I didn't know I had. I also now know how well I can create stuff by writing it down."
William's teacher, Kiki Singer said:
The competition has been a huge success for our pupils. We took part in order to encourage our pupils to write and to love writing. It certainly has achieved its aims. All through our WWE day, pupils shared ideas and really immersed themselves in writing about the wrestling world. The tasks were very varied and touched on many aspects of writing which was great!"
Three runners up, also selected at random, will receive a WWE merchandise pack and every child who entered the competition will be sent a small gift from WWE to acknowledge their achievement.
