World Book Night has 10,000 volunteer applications in seven days
10 Dec 2010
World Book Night has processed 10,000 applications through its website attracting over 81,000 individual worldwide visitors since the launch. World Book Night is looking to recruit 20,000 readers to help give away one million books on 5th March 2011.
World Book Night chair Jamie Byng says:
A week ago we launched World Book Night and the response to the initiative has been overwhelming. Not only have we been inundated with heartfelt and creative applications from members of the public wanting to be givers but these have come from an incredibly wide range of people and places.
National Literacy Trust trustee and Random House Group CEO Gail Rebuck says:
"It is terrific that World Book Night now gives adults an opportunity to join the celebration by sharing their passion for their favourite book or by being the lucky recipient of one of the million books to be given away."
The initiative launched last week with a feature on BBC2's 'The Culture Show'. Twenty-five titles have been chosen to be given away by volunteers and organisers. The deadline to apply is 4 January 2011.
