Department for Education releases Schools White Paper
26 Nov 2010
Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove has revealed plans to reform the curriculum, focus on teacher training and improve discipline in schools across England with the release of the new schools white paper.
The white paper builds on previous announcements about the expansion of the academies programme and the reading test for six-year-olds to give a clearer picture of the coalition government’s education priorities. The focus of the paper is on ‘rigorous’ academics, freedoms for schools over the curriculum they teach and the introductions of new powers to allow headteachers and other staff to discipline pupils.
BBC analysis of the report described the approach as a “back to the future approach” that would win Mr Gove both friends and enemies, while the Daily Telegraph said the report signalled a "back to basics approach."
