Family Nurse Partnership to double in size by 2015

29 Oct 2010

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has announced that the Family Nurse Partnership will double in size by 2015, supporting 12,000 disadvantaged families.

The Family Nurse Partnership has been piloted in the UK since 2007 and currently serves 6,000 disadvantaged families. The programme is based on 30 years of American research which shows that early “intensive care” for disadvantaged families and young parents can have significant benefits, reducing the risk of abuse and neglect and improving language ability and fitness to start school.

Andrew Lansley said, “Every child deserves the best start in life. The first years of life have a long lasting impact on a child’s health, relationships and happiness. We know that early intervention – as provided by the Family Nurse Partnership programme – can help young parents to look after their children better, and can help break inter-generational patterns of disadvantage.”

For more information on the Family Nurse Partnership please see TTYB’s news story Family Nurse Partnership improving outcomes for vulnerable families from 23 Sep 2009 or the Department of Health website.
