National Year in jeopardy
20 Aug 2010
Children’s Minister Sarah Teather has confirmed that funding for the national year of speech, language and communication will be considered in the comprehensive spending review.
John Bercow MP recommended the creation of the national year after his 2008 speech, language and communication review. The review preceded the previous Government’s Better Communication Action Plan, also published in 2008. The year is aimed at raising awareness and improving early intervention for children with speech and language delay. Jean Gross, Communication Champion, is optimistic about the future of the National Year because there are "clear links between children’s speech and language and communication skills and their achievement at school, as well as the links between speech, language and communication and poverty."
