Children encouraged to find their inner ‘wild thing’

5 May 2010

The National Literacy Trust has teamed up with the Sunday Express to launch a new and exciting story writing competition for children under 13 to celebrate the DVD release of Where The Wild Things Are.

Taking inspiration from the movie based on the children’s book by Maurice Sendak, entries to the competition must transport the reader to a land of adventure, fun and intrigue. The winner will have their story published in the Sunday Express. The winner and four friends will also win the opportunity to make a film with First Light, an organisation that funds and inspires film projects enabling young people to realise their potential via creative digital film and media projects. You can read more about First Light here.

Two runners up will receive goodie bags.

National Literacy Trust Director, Jonathan Douglas says that he hopes the Where The Wild Things Are competition will inspire young people to gain confidence in their writing.

Jonathan says:

“Who knows, this competition could discover the next Harry Potter”.

Entrants must submit 100 words on the themes of adventure, childhood and imagination. Entries should be submitted along with the entrants name, address and daytime telephone number to: Where The Wild Things Are Competition, Sunday Express, Number 10 Lower Thames Street, London EC3R 6EN. The competition closes on 30 June. Entrants must be aged 12 or under on 30 June.
