Foundation stage hits reception teachers hard
12 Mar 2010
The TES has reported on a review of the first year of the Early Years Foundation Stage, which highlighted pressures on reception teachers. The survey of more than 1,200 practitioners was carried out by the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency, in advance of an official review by the Department for Children, Schools and Families later this year. Survey respondents reported conflicting advice, mounting paperwork and the additional demands around literacy and mathematics. More than one in four do not support the content and level of demand of the communication, language and literacy goals.
However, the review also found support for key aspects of the EYFS, such as using children's interests as a basis for balancing child-initiated and adult-initiated activities.
