Headteachers claim no quick fix to literacy problems

Heads fear future budget constraints and a difficult home learning environment for many children means that recent gains will not last. The heads are also concerned that the stigma attached to being a National Challenge school has a negative impact on the learning of many children. Many teachers also believe that being named as a National Challenge "failing" school has affected their student and teacher recruitment figures significantly.
