Ofsted annual report released
25 Nov 2009
The report stated that "the foundations for good literacy are laid in a child’s early years. Outstanding childcare providers model spoken language well. They provide opportunities for children to explore letters and sounds, and establish a rich context for reading through stories and display." The report concluded that the picture overall was more positive than in previous years, with fewer failing schools.
Some criticism of the report and the work of Ofsted have suggested it has too wide a focus. Gilbert said:
I am clear of the greatest challenge: to raise the quality of the provision that is only satisfactory to the level of good or outstanding.
