Proposals offer more choice and help parents share care

1 Apr 2009

The proposals from the EHRC would mean that, if they wanted, mothers would be able to take up to 10 months off in the first year after the birth of their baby at 90% of their salary. This would be a real boost for families, particularly during a recession, as mothers say they are being forced back to work earlier than they would like, in order to make ends meet.

And the proposals also give parents choice, offering mums a chance to take six months, go back to work and let the father take over for the following four months at the same rate.

Family and Parenting Institute welcomes the proposals but also believes that there should be more options to take parental leave when children are older and that it should not just be confined to the first year.
