The Young Readers Programme for vulnerable groups
The Young Readers Programme can also be adapted to work with other vulnerable groups.
Young carers
Young carers face a range of impacts which put them at a disadvantage including not enough time for homework, missing school due to caring responsibilities and additional mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Attending Young Readers Programme sessions gives the children a break from their caring responsibilities as well as support for their success at school and beyond. Following a successful pilot in 2010 we have developed an adaptation of the Young Readers Programme that is ready to be rolled out.
Looked-after children
In 2011-12 we worked with Niall Walker, Edinburgh’s Reading Champion to adapt the Young Readers Programme for looked-after children in residential care. Children and young people took part in a variety of events including cookery sessions and pampering evenings where they chose their books. Feedback suggests the choice and ownership elements of the programme were particularly beneficial not only to the children’s motivation to read but also their self-confidence.
