Launch of our Middlesbrough campaign
17 Jan 2013
We are working in partnership with Middlesbrough Council to increase awareness of the importance of literacy skills in the area and to extend the reach of literacy support for local people and improve their life chances and employability.
The Middlesbrough Reading Campaign is launching on 29 January. To mark the launch of the campaign, children and families are invited to a one-off book giveaway where Middlesbrough Football Club player Lukas Jutkiewicz, club mascot “Roary the lion” and Deputy Mayor Budd will be giving out free books outside an Arriva bus in Morrisons’ car park, Berwick Hills. Teeside author Keith Brumpton will also be reading extracts from his Dino FC series, which children can win in a penalty shoot-out against Jutkiewicz.
The Middlesbrough Reading Campaign, supported with funding from the Booker Prize Foundation and the Man Charitable Trust, marks a completely new and innovative approach to addressing low literacy. Campaign initiatives include:
- Training of volunteers to work with 375 families in the community to champion literacy
- Local partners such as Middlesbrough FC, Business in the Community and Greggs, helping 150 school pupils achieve the communication skills they need to gain work
- Distributing books into the community via a partnership with Arriva Bus Company
- A local media campaign disseminating positive messages about reading to local communities and giving practical tips to parents on how to confidently support their children’s reading development
