England’s primary reading levels just outside world top ten

12 Dec 2012

The latest PIRLS report has revealed that England’s primary reading has improved from 15th place to 11th out of the 49 countries that participated in the study, with Hong Kong in first place. This means that 5% of 10-year-olds in England are unable to locate and retrieve information from different parts of text.

As with previous PIRLS assessments, the 2011 report found a strong relationship between student attitudes towards reading and their reading achievement. Students who like reading have higher average achievement than those who only ‘somewhat like reading’ or ‘do not like reading’. In the UK only 26% of children like reading, 53% ‘somewhat like reading’ and 20% ‘do not like reading at all’.
