Special interest group of MPs and Peers looks at 21st century literacy issues
27 Nov 2012
The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Literacy held its Annual General Meeting today to discuss the success of this year's commission on boys' reading and our recent research on children's reading. The National Literacy Trust holds the Secretariat for this group.
Following a very busy and successful year as Chair of the group, Gavin Barwell MP has had to step down because of his new position as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Michael Gove. Robert Halfon MP has been elected as the new Chair and will be playing an important role over the next year. Both Conservative MP Stephen McPartland and Crossbench peer Lord Knight have been re-elected as Vice Chairs.
Gavin Barwell MP reported on the success of our commission on boys' reading. We also reported on our latest reading research which has highlighted that children are reading less often and reading across all formats has declined. The members of the group also discussed a potential commission on literacy for employability in 2013.
